OPM3 - Strategy & Projects

OPM3 is a standard created by the Project Management Institute, an internationally recognized professional development and standards body. OPM3 is the Organizational Project Management Maturity Model®. That phrase describes how efficiently and effectively an organization manages its projects and how it aligns each project with the organization’s overall strategy.

OPM3 is a method that bridges the gap between organizational strategy and individual projects. To do so OPM3 uses a comprehensive body of knowledge of best practices in organizational project management -- 586 internationally recognized best practices, each supported by one or more organizational capabilities. Using OPM3 allows an organization to determine what best practices and capabilities it does and does not have – in other words the organization’s project management maturity.

A self-assessment method (SAM) can be used to quickly determine your organization's level of project management maturity. Randy Bennett, a certified Project Management Professional (PMP), can facilitate a SAM for your organization. Using his experience with the development of OPM3 since 1999, he can lead your organization through a SAM, from planning to final report, in 5-7 work days at a cost of between $8,000 and $12,000.

OPM3 focuses on three domains. (1) A project is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result. (2) A program is a group of related projects managed in a coordinated way to obtain benefits and control not available from managing them individually. (3) A portfolio is a collection of projects and/or programs that are grouped together for effective management and to meet the organization’s strategic objectives.

Randy Bennett was actively involved in the development of the original OPM3 standard, published in 2003. He is also actively involved, including a leadership role, in designing the assessment method for the second edition, to be published in 2008. He was also involved in the development of a Program and Portfolio Management Standard with the Project Management Institute, published in 2005.
